Choosing an Off-Road Vehicle

Generally, off-road vehicles have large tires and a flexible suspension that allows them to keep their road wheels on the ground. They also have enough ground clearance to avoid rocks, boulders, mud and other debris without suffering damage.

Four-wheel drive

Four-wheel drive is an important feature for off-road vehicles, as it provides extra traction by having all four wheels powered by the engine. Most cars and crossovers are front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive, which only send power to two wheels at a time.

While many vehicles can be made off-road capable with four-wheel drive, it’s important to know your needs and what kind of terrain you will be driving in before purchasing a 4WD vehicle. Unlike AWD which can adjust on the fly to provide more power to one or the other wheel as needed, full-time four-wheel drive systems will remain in 4WD all the time and lock power between the front and rear wheels. Snowmobiles are tracked vehicles that allow users to navigate snow-covered trails and terrain. Unlike OHVs with tires, snowmobiles are not street legal and must be hauled to the trail or riding area with a truck or trailer.

Side-by-sides, also known as UTVs, are a fast-growing off-road category that emerged from the ATV market as a standalone segment. These vehicles use a steering wheel and foot pedals, but have side-by-side bucket seating for up to six people.


There are several different types of tires that are capable of handling off road driving. These include all-terrain (AT) tires, mud terrain (MT) tires, rock crawling (R) tires, and sand and dirt racing tires (SS). Some of these tires are DOT-rated, while others aren’t.

MT tires have stiff sidewalls and deep grooves to handle mud, rock, and sand. They also have a high lifespan and puncture resistance. However, they can be noisy on the highway and are expensive. SS tires are great for drivers that need a tire that can perform in multiple conditions. However, they are not as good as dedicated off-road tires in mud or sand.

Sand and dirt racing tires have large lugs that help them cling to loose surfaces. They are also designed to disperse impact force more evenly. Many four-wheel drive vehicles feature a front suspension made from a solid axle and leaf springs.
